Sophomore: Virginia Commonwealth University has been an adventure as a campus and university to learn under. The main aspects that differentiate VCU from most other universities in Virginia are the urban landscape, art forward movement, and the progressiveness of the university itself. I like the arty feel of the campus and university and I feel much more comfortable in this urban setting rather than the rural campuses like UVA. The campus can be accessed easily and is also very walkable. The main issues are the traffic and homeless people, but I don't find it much as a problem if you plan ahead, are generally cognizant, and kind. The programs and classes are exciting and not too unbearable. Though, I am a bit biased because my major is in psychology and I was not able to take most of the General Education classes due to my pre-existing credits. The professors are also generally great. Freshman: I enjoyed most courses and classes, however, some key information was left out of SDV 100, especially regarding where assignments could be located; such as not all assignments will appear on your dashboard. I missed a few early assignments because of this. Most teachers were/are wonderful, however, some showed no interest in their subject or students. For example, canceling classes consistently to the point where more classes were canceled than not. Some teachers didn't even hold lectures or offer help/remediation. Sophomore: My experience at Virginia State University has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. My college feels like my home away from home. I selected a Historically Black College/University to experience something different. It is wonderful to see many young adults of African American descent with common goals, values and beliefs pursuing their dreams. The faculty and staff are very professional and provide challenging and engaging class experiences. I am learning so much about my selected major and future career. Faculty and advisors provided meaningful guidance to students. As an athlete, the coaching staff is well trained and provide additional mentoring and direction to young athletes. The Sport programs are balanced with providing students with scheduled study time, academic guidance and community service opportunities.
