Freshman: I find the University of Massachusetts Amherst a very open en welcoming university. As an international student, it can be hard to be far away from home, but I believe UMass Amherst does a great job in making students feel at home; UMass has a close community of students who genuinely care for each other. Freshman: The transfer process to this school was incredibly easy and I never regret my decision! Freshman: Currently, I'm a student at Simmons University. While there's a lot wrong with the school (...Bartol), there are also some great things. All of my professors have been very dedicated to seeing me succeed, and are willing to put in extra time and effort to help me. Everyone I've met is either extremely friendly, or at least cordial, and I've made some of my best friends here. The dorms aren't great, but they also aren't awful. You can put in a work order, and usually, things get fixed. If you decorate, it will feel less like a jail cell. This school is STEM-focused, so humanities majors may find resources lacking, but the professors in humanities departments will acknowledge this. It's also great for LGBT students, as you won't be the minority. However, for POC students, there is work to be done. There are a lot of events specifically for POC students, though! Alum: I went to Regis undergrad nursing and graduated 5.5 years ago. I had lived in campus and had a wonderful time. It is a small college but that appealed to me because I didn’t want to be in a lecture hall with 400 other people. My biggest class size was about 35 people and it was a lecture course. There was a pretty good array of extra curricular activities for those like Me that don’t do sports. I enjoyed campus ministry and in my freshman year, I was a part of the theatre troupe and put on the play Godspell. I do wish there had been more plays or musicals during my time. The biggest problem during my time there was the food. The dining hall struggled to provide good nutrition but by my senior year they had hired a new company and were making good strives to fix it. There was also a Dunkin’ on campus which was awesome and then the LSU had a grill and premade meals. Freshman: As I'm finishing up my first semester of Bridgewater State, I have to say I've found myself to be very comfortable in this community. I'm double majoring in elementary education and sociology with an education concentration and all of my courses thus far have been very interesting and engaging. This university is perfect for future educators looking to get their higher education at a good price within a program that has been doing this for as long as they've been open. The campus is beautiful through any weather and I've found myself a great friend group that has been so supportive and made my experience that much better. The food can sometimes be subpar, but I would recommend Tillinghast Hall and Bears Den the most because of all of their healthy and not so healthy options. Alum: Northeastern provides lots of amenities to make students with different backgrounds comfortable. Lots of offerings help students feel supported in their mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing (e.g. meditation/prayer room, mental wellness programs, gym incl. group fitness programs, cafes on campus incl. Starbucks). The School is in the city, however still is one big campus which is rather rare for city campuses. I've had a good experience with my classes. There is a big variety to choose from. The international students could have been better integrated into the American student body. However clubs on campus allowed to meet people from all backgrounds. The variety of clubs and initiatives on campus is vast! The school has a great connection to the industry and the co-op program allows you to graduate with practical experience. Freshman: Coming from Ghana and choosing QCC is the best decision I ever made. Initially I was nervous because I was in a new country and being black I was just contemplating. I absolutely love quinsigamond community college because of the amazing community of people here. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming, and there's always something fun going on. Alum: I was a dual enrollment student at MCC for almost three years. I studied only virtually for my degree. It was a great experience. The staff and faculty in general were super helpful and supportive of the students. Something that could be improved is with the online classes, there’s really not much chance to get engaged with the MCC community. It’s hard to hear about new events and activities going on unless you somehow have a very close relationship with your professor. If you do happen to hear about events , programs, etc and get involved in other activities, it’s a very great learning experience and a chance to build your network. Sophomore: Holyoke Community College has been a really great experience for me. My psychology professors in particular are incredibly knowledgeable, and are great at providing supplemental support. Something I'd like others to know that it took me a while to realize is: you are not getting the short end of the sticky by going to community college! HCC's disability services are incredibly inclusive and I would not be where I am without their support and accommodations. HCC also has so many resources if you are in need of school supplies, menstrual supplies, housing, food security--the list goes on. Freshman: MassBay was the first school I'd attended after dropping out of high school for physical & mental health reasons. I was nervous at first, as I was used to schools overlooking my needs, or making classes inaccessible by default (e.g., in high school, my disabling fatigue meant that sometimes I couldn't attend class, and missing even one day was disastrous as it'd cause me to fall behind). This isn't the case at MassBay. My first in-person class was with Prof. Keegan, with whom I didn't even NEED to request accommodations, because he was so good about putting everything on Blackboard by default! I'm having a similarly positive experience with Prof. Bastien. MassBay's teachers are passionate about what they do, and I feel like they actually care about my success. Missing classes due to my health is no longer a "death sentence" for me. I'm not falling behind because of 1 missed day anymore! Alum: I knew that I wanted to attend a small liberal arts school, especially one that was LGBTQ+-friendly and would be safe for me as a trans student. I found Hampshire through CTCL and when I visited campus as a junior, I fell in love with the rural, woodsy campus. I know that this school isn't right for everyone - the built-in structure is limited, and you're mostly on your own to figure out what needs to get done - but I knew what I was getting into and that experience helped me massively in learning how to advocate for myself and ask for help. Some people feel isolated in such a small student body, but I discovered my 'found family' here and it was fairly easy for me to make friends who understood my identity and respected me. Freshman: I first began taking courses at BCC, in my jr year of high school, continued through the summer, and finished my dual enrollment in December of my senior year. I was able to experience a Personal Communications course in my Jr year of high school, which was one of the most fun and intriguing experience. Me and two of my other friends took the course and we loved it, up until covid came and we went fully online. I also took a summer course in Sociology, which was just as fun, just online. I was originally planning on beginning my college journey at a University, but due to the pandemic, I found that staying local was my best option, especially considering the amazing community college that was available for me.
