Sophomore: I am starting to find my place at Tufts. The campus is vibrant and inclusive, and I appreciate the presence of identity houses that celebrate diversity and provide a strong sense of community. The range of on-campus activities is incredible, offering endless opportunities for personal growth and connection. Thanks to these activities, I had the chance to meet individuals who, like me, were low-income first-generation students and people of color. Building this network of these individuals allowed me to form genuine friendships and find myself a support system that understood my challenge. At times, I struggled with imposter syndrome, feeling inadequate compared to the academically accomplished majority of the student body, many of whom came from privileged backgrounds both racially and economically. Freshman: Currently, I'm a student at Simmons University. While there's a lot wrong with the school (...Bartol), there are also some great things. All of my professors have been very dedicated to seeing me succeed, and are willing to put in extra time and effort to help me. Everyone I've met is either extremely friendly, or at least cordial, and I've made some of my best friends here. The dorms aren't great, but they also aren't awful. You can put in a work order, and usually, things get fixed. If you decorate, it will feel less like a jail cell. This school is STEM-focused, so humanities majors may find resources lacking, but the professors in humanities departments will acknowledge this. It's also great for LGBT students, as you won't be the minority. However, for POC students, there is work to be done. There are a lot of events specifically for POC students, though! Senior: Rivier University is great if you want small class sizes and a small campus environment and community. All of my classes have been less than 30 students, and most were 15 or less. As a part of the biotechnology program, I have reaped the benefits of a brand-new science building and lab spaces. There is also a brand-new business and nursing building opening in fall 2022 as well as new dorms being added to campus. If you want a school with small class sizes where you know everyone who lives in your hallway and seeing friendly faces every time you walk to class, Riv is for you! Junior: The vast majority of the professors at Regis are the most helpful and kind people I have ever met. Every professor I've had has always taken the time to answer any questions I may have, they have been patient with me and assisted me when I made the decision to change my major, and they've offered so much support in all of my ventures. They have also encouraged me to excel and to step out of my comfort zone which has made me a better and more enthusiastic student. The classes are small so there's a better chance of getting you're question answered during class and not having to wait to send over an email. Graduate Student: The last three years have been challenging yet rewarding as an IT student. Freshman: Merrimack College is a great place to flourish into becoming yourself. There is an abundance of resources from the Arcidi Center to the staff to Warrior One Stop that all want to see you succeed. It is a tight knit community so there are always events going on around the campus if you ever need a distraction from the workload. Alum: Northeastern provides lots of amenities to make students with different backgrounds comfortable. Lots of offerings help students feel supported in their mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing (e.g. meditation/prayer room, mental wellness programs, gym incl. group fitness programs, cafes on campus incl. Starbucks). The School is in the city, however still is one big campus which is rather rare for city campuses. I've had a good experience with my classes. There is a big variety to choose from. The international students could have been better integrated into the American student body. However clubs on campus allowed to meet people from all backgrounds. The variety of clubs and initiatives on campus is vast! The school has a great connection to the industry and the co-op program allows you to graduate with practical experience. Alum: I was a dual enrollment student at MCC for almost three years. I studied only virtually for my degree. It was a great experience. The staff and faculty in general were super helpful and supportive of the students. Something that could be improved is with the online classes, there’s really not much chance to get engaged with the MCC community. It’s hard to hear about new events and activities going on unless you somehow have a very close relationship with your professor. If you do happen to hear about events , programs, etc and get involved in other activities, it’s a very great learning experience and a chance to build your network. So my only suggestion for future students is if you do happen to take online courses, make sure you constantly ask classmates and professors about different opportunities available that you may be interested in. Freshman: MassBay was the first school I'd attended after dropping out of high school for physical & mental health reasons. I was nervous at first, as I was used to schools overlooking my needs, or making classes inaccessible by default (e.g., in high school, my disabling fatigue meant that sometimes I couldn't attend class, and missing even one day was disastrous as it'd cause me to fall behind). This isn't the case at MassBay. My first in-person class was with Prof. Keegan, with whom I didn't even NEED to request accommodations, because he was so good about putting everything on Blackboard by default! I'm having a similarly positive experience with Prof. Bastien. MassBay's teachers are passionate about what they do, and I feel like they actually care about my success. Missing classes due to my health is no longer a "death sentence" for me. I'm not falling behind because of 1 missed day anymore!
