Freshman: I love being at Earlham so much. It's a very small school so much of your instruction is going to be essentially one-on-one teaching (many of my classes I'm one of only three, for example). Classes are generally rigorous and interesting, most of my professors are really awesome and great at what they do, the campus (in my opinion) is just gorgeous, and I've literally never had as many friends before. I also love that every single student gets the exact same opportunities as any other. That said, it's not perfect: administration often sucks, the dining hall is usually terrible (the café mitigates that a bit on weekdays), Richmond isn't that great of a town to live in for a variety of reasons (Earlham seemingly kind of exists in its own bubble, though), and it's expensive (though financial aid is usually pretty generous). Junior: Indiana University Bloomington is truly the most welcoming atmosphere I have ever been fortunate to experience. There is a wonderful blend of academics and social life with an enormous amount of opportunities for both. Not only are the students and faculty incredibly supportive, but the campus itself quite literally "blooms" with bright green forestry and wildlife (pun intended)! One of my favorite aspects of the university is that most of the upperclassmen become mentors for new incoming students. This continuous cycle of lending a hand gives students the chance to have 24/7 guidance and a chance to give back as they approach graduation. I have absolutely adored all of my professors and been challenged to achieve more than I ever dreamed of. If I had to recommend the university to change something, it may just be to hire more professors so that smaller class sizes are more common so that peers feel more like a family. Junior: I have been enjoying my time at Taylor University. The professors are fantastic! They are fun, personable, knowledgeable, kind, caring and very helpful. Sophomore: I really like having small classes (<30 people) as there’s more participation and interaction with professors, your fellow students, and the material you are learning. It doesn’t make you feel like you are just one fish in the ocean of students. Teachers know who you are and some will try to even get to know you outside of the classroom. The campus is also small, which can be a pro or a con, but it is definitely a pro when you don’t want to walk far or take a bus to get to classes (especially in the winter)! Everything is <20 minute walk. Almost everywhere you go, you see someone you know. Taking classes outside of your major and minor (as any liberal arts college values) is super beneficial as it opens you up to new perspectives and broadens your understanding of society. Junior: Valparaiso University is a small school in Valparaiso, Indiana who's boasts are its rich history with the Lutheran church, its nationally ranked college of engineering, college of nursing, and meteorology program. When it comes to academics, Valpo has tried its best to support me in both my successes and struggles. While the structural portion of the civil engineering courses seems to be subpar currently, all other classes have been advantageous for my degree. The College of engineering has helpful professors and helping hands offered by other students because of its small size. Socially, Valpo may be a little more difficult to navigate because there is a low student population. But, Valpo does try to offer everything it can to suit your wants and needs. As a christian, I was struggling to find a group. But I found the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a worship service called Celebrate! in which I now participate weekly in both. Sophomore: The best thing about the University of Indianapolis is their small class size! It is very personable and engaging, and allows you to get to know your professors as well as allowing them to get to know you; something that is very helpful for making connections. They also have a wonderful, very relaxed music program with incredible professional musicians who are wonderful, kind people that have a passion for their instrument and are committed to helping you take your musical aspirations to the next level. In addition to this, they also have an incredible performance hall in which music majors get to play and perform in, which was a huge draw for me! The campus is not located in the best part of town unfortunately, and could stand to have some better security in some of the buildings, but the campus grounds are beautiful over all, and due to the small campus size, everything is very close and within an easy, short walking distance of each other. Graduate Student: Great online classes for RN>BSN, quick terms and manageable coursework. Professors are quick to respond and and give constructive feedback when assistance is needed for assignments. Calendar week is Tuesday thru Monday which allows for more week time or weekend schedule adjustment when planning your course work for the week. Most nursing courses are 6-8 weeks which help you to feel less overwhelmed with the content. Also since the course lengths are shorter, classes all run individually and you are only taking one at a time. There is no long waiting periods between between courses that will prolong your degree completion, one course will end on a Monday and your next course will begin on Tuesday. As a mom of three that also works full time Indiana Wesleyan course work has been a very manageable. And the counseling/enrollment team has been wonderful with all their assistance putting an appropriate degree schedule for me as well as accepting all of my community college transfer credits.... Smaller class sizes have been super beneficial for me, and I feel like I have gotten to know my professors and classmates in a way I wasn't able to at other schools. I love to see the wild life running between the trees on Dame Mall every day. the buildings are not too far apart allowing for short walk times between classes, and lowering the risk of being late to class.
