Alum: My experience started right along the cusp of COVID. Starting and then very quickly transitioning into online format as a fine arts student was difficult. Doing pottery from you bedroom is tough. The school worked the kinks out quick long having already had online formats prior. Once we were allowed back on campus the opportunities grew. Student life is active the professors are working artists as well which provide more advise on a contemporary basis than a student teacher basis. The professor are well rounded experts in the field they teach and have helped open doors professional for me and other students too. Which I highly beneficial in the art world. Freshman: Maine College of Art and Design is located in Portland Maine where there is a multitude of activities in the area to satisfy anyone's desire for entertainment. The food in the area is considered to be top-notch and some restaurants have gotten prestigious awards for their food. If you like walking around cities, this city has the beauty of old buildings and it is on the ocean bay so you can see many sailboats and islands in the city shopping center. Hospitals are not far away also and there are wonderful doctors and health spas in the area, They are also extremely diversified to help anyone that is sick and they are convenient to access from anywhere in town. Also, if you like to do yoga or exercise there are many great workout gyms. Also, there is a wonderful farmers' market in the park on weekends to get organic vegetables from and many wonderful supermarkets that have many available gluten-free and vegan options. The professors are engaging, the classes have a good amount of students, the activities are festive and everybody enjoys them. The sermons are powerful, and there is appropriate separation between males and females that keeps people from making mistakes and poor decisions. Junior: As someone who is half introverted and half extroverted, I love this school with a passion. It is pretty small, but in my opinion that makes it a plus. Every professor I have had has given feedback on my work and has had conversations with me and others. Each professor knows each students' name and actively engages each one to help them achieve their fullest potential in whatever field/major they are pursuing. Sophomore: Virginia Commonwealth University has been an adventure as a campus and university to learn under. The main aspects that differentiate VCU from most other universities in Virginia are the urban landscape, art forward movement, and the progressiveness of the university itself. I like the arty feel of the campus and university and I feel much more comfortable in this urban setting rather than the rural campuses like UVA. The campus can be accessed easily and is also very walkable. The main issues are the traffic and homeless people, but I don't find it much as a problem if you plan ahead, are generally cognizant, and kind. The programs and classes are exciting and not too unbearable. Though, I am a bit biased because my major is in psychology and I was not able to take most of the General Education classes due to my pre-existing credits. The professors are also generally great. Sophomore: GSU is overall a great school. Being that it's in the middle of Downtown Atlanta, it's always something to do, the school always is trying to get students to engage with each other. I would like to see change regarding the housing situation and financial aid. Graduate Student: I did the 5 year BFA/MAT program! I just graduated with my MAT in 2022. MICA has its ups and downs. My experience in undergrad was complicated because of COVID-19 closures and restrictions. But, the MAT program adapted well to all the challenges! The MAT program is incredible, full of amazing professors and your cohort becomes a lovely community. MAT did an incredible job preparing me to become a k-12 art educator. My classes explored strategies, theories, techniques, planning, and more. While the 3 internships (student teaching) allowed for excellent hands-on experience! The 5 year program can be hard to balance, as you start to take graduate classes while you are working on finishing undergrad. Some majors are more flexible than others to fit the requirements. MICA is located in Baltimore, which also has its ups and downs. Baltimore has a great art scene.
