College Freshman: Lewis & Clark College has provided me with the best educational opportunities I have received from an academic institution thus far. The learning environment on campus is contagious for the intense interest that the professors have in their field as well as in the students' understanding of such topics creates a community in which information is not only learned, but absorbed, applied, and cherished. The small class sizes add to this quality by allowing for open discussions on the subject material. For example, the freshman core class (Exploration and Discovery) is an enriching experience due to both the wide range of literature covered as well as the discussion that follows each reading. In this class, one can get to know the other fifteen or so students in a way that leads to more understanding between peers and an environment in which all ideas are tolerated and accepted; even if an idea does not coincide with one's own, one learns to see another point of view and consider its validity. Apart from the standard core classes and general education requirements, Lewis & Clark offers a wide variety of other courses that further one's understanding of the world as well as one's own abilities. I took a class this semester called "Fundamentals of Movement" in which anatomy was discussed in terms of movement, frequently dance-related movement. This class was particularly memorable in that it had a lot of partner work that involved a combination of massage and similar palpating activities. The class overall improved my understanding of my own body as well as its likeness with others. This class is only a taste of what unique courses Lewis & Clark offers. Not only is the academic community rigorous and engaging, the student community is equally positive. This year, my hallmates in Copeland residence hall have become more of family than a group of fellow tenants and the amount of support we have for each other is amazing. This quality is reflected in the college as a whole.
