Sophomore: Since enrolling at the University of Central Florida there have been many ups and downs. Some things I really enjoyed about the campus was just its mass size. Not only in square miles but also in student population UCF is one of the biggest universities in the United States. With UCF having over 68,000 students it is very easy to network with peers. With that being said, having so many students does make it difficult for UCF to provide all the services students may need in a timely manner. For example, during registration period advisors are very limited and could be scheduled out for 3 weeks. I wish that during busy period that more staff were available to help students in need. UCF does offer walk-in advising which I believe was a great way to combat that issue. Sophomore: I've found the community and faculty here to be very helpful. I struggled a lot with finding a school that was the perfect match and that felt right. This school seemed the most interested in sculpting me to not only be a better student but a better person. I think that the faculty genuinely care about the students and our well-being, and this is something I highly appreciate since my high school was not always like this. The school also has a beautiful campus, although some of the facilities are quite run down and could use renovation. I do, however, think that the school could place some more consideration into the physical well-being of the students. The health services here are lacking, and don't always take students' health concerns seriously. As far as the dining services, the food does not meet the standards it should for the limited options and pricey meal plan we pay per semester. Junior: CofC is, for the most part, a wonderful college with beautiful surroundings and a social, engaged community. The professors care for their students and do not hesitate to let their students know it is okay to reach out for assistance, or to take break if they truly require it. Teaching attitudes largely vary by department; I am more experienced in theatre courses, and while some profs often have out-there or rather disconcerting teaching methods, most are very passionate about their craft and seek to give their students the same experience. Alum: Loyola University New Orleans is, for me, then place where new experiences are formed. My first years there was a little roller coaster because of multiple factors. First, I am from another country, therefore the cultural and education system shock was a big thing. I met a lot of people and learned so much from the amazing, well-prepared professors. Sophomore: The campus is beautiful, for starters. Good food, great professors, a wealth of different class types. I joined the Collins Living Learning Community my freshman year, and that was a great way to make a huge university feel smaller when I needed that comfort. My major complaint about IU is that it seems like academic success is socially discouraged. There are week-long quiet hours during finals, and there are quiet hours in the dorms every night, but these rules (as well as rules about disruptive drinking in dorms) are not enforced, meaning that people who actually need to study need to either go elsewhere or grin and bear it. Freshman: Currently, I'm a student at Simmons University. While there's a lot wrong with the school (...Bartol), there are also some great things. All of my professors have been very dedicated to seeing me succeed, and are willing to put in extra time and effort to help me. Everyone I've met is either extremely friendly, or at least cordial, and I've made some of my best friends here. The dorms aren't great, but they also aren't awful. You can put in a work order, and usually, things get fixed. If you decorate, it will feel less like a jail cell. This school is STEM-focused, so humanities majors may find resources lacking, but the professors in humanities departments will acknowledge this. It's also great for LGBT students, as you won't be the minority. However, for POC students, there is work to be done. There are a lot of events specifically for POC students, though! Sophomore: The University of Tulsa is the perfect uni that allows me to stay close to home, close to my Vietnamese community, be part of a tight-knit school environment, and attend for a relatively good price with a TON of scholarship money. As a psychology major, TU offers adequate education. Because TU specializes in STEM, my academic experience hasn't been entirely fruitful compared to my STEM counterparts. However, abundant research opportunities with TURK have helped expand my knowledge and experience. Aside from academics, the food on campus is DELICIOUS with a wide variety of flavors to choose from. If you decide to not eat on campus, consider taking a 5-min drive to downtown Tulsa or down Route 66 where there's an abundant amount of restaurants, attractions, and shops to visit! Freshman: UNA is a great school if you are looking for an individualized, and small town experience. Class sizes usually range from 15-40 students depending on the course, so teachers are usually very open and available to assist you personally. I also love that, since campus is a bit smaller than most 4 year universities, it’s easy to make friends and get to know a lot of people. Not only this, but there are several clubs and organizations to get involved in across campus. Freshman: A little expensive for the quality of education and resources there. Plenty of ADHD and special needs accommodations but services are hard to waitlist/access and the staff isn’t always helpful. Most professors are nice but the quality of education isn’t challenging with well thought out organized lectures to cohesively teach. Dining hall is better compared to most schools but expensive per meal. The students at the school are pretty odd but a good diverse student population. I find that a lot of people have issues with the housing office throughout the year. However, the gym is very nice with decent hours. Big weight room, basketball courts, and cardio equipment. Work study is hard to get a job at this school and the hours are inconvenient. The job extends your hours without pay sometimes. Sophomore: I enjoy going to FIT very much. As a creative, you are truly given so many artistic opportunities at this school. And despite the major that you initially choose you are able to take classes from other areas as well. I am a Photography major, but I also participate in Fine Arts(abstract painting and sculpting classes), Film & Videography, and even Jewelry Design classes. As a photographer they allow me to use all sorts of cameras and lighting equipment for free and that is very beneficial to my craft so I deeply appreciate such an opportunity. My only problem is that it is quite expensive. I believe school should be a lot more affordable, considering that they want you to attend a good school to be able to apply for high paying jobs. Sophomore: Based on my experience at DePaul, the academic programs, professors, and students have been amazing! Not only is everyone friendly, but connections between classmates and professors are also quickly made due to intimate-sized classes. We run on a 10-week quarter system so the course material will move at a quick pace. There are events for students to attend on the regular where students can get free university merch, food, and other things. Extracurriculars wise there are so many clubs and organizations to join. I believe some require payment and others are free. Other student resources, like tutoring or accessing the alumni network, are also available. These are good options if you need help or insight about your major or help with concepts taught in class. Also, ask your counselor or resident advisor for information if you are housing on campus.
