Sophomore: Make sure to do your research before deciding to apply or committing. Definitely a lot of prestige, resources, and amazing people. However, as an inner city kid from the midwest, the east coast, especially Boston, was sort of a culture shock. Social life is not as prominent as it is at other schools because academics and athletics definitely dominate the scene. Boston is definitely a college CITY. With so many colleges in a 10 mile radius you only see college study out and about. Sophomore: Currently reaching near the middle of my time here, and this school truly works you to the bone. The baseline of this place is that everyone is very smart. Some are decently smart and work hard enough to get in, others come in doing Olympiads from when they were 5 years old. The students are very diverse. Some come in "normal", others finally get to truly express the weird and unique that they've been suppressing their whole lives. The campus is extremely welcoming and you really get to be who you want to be; it's very beautiful. Each dorm has an extant history and culture; you can automatically learn about someone by what dorm they live in. The academics are exceedingly difficult by content and pace. The problem set difficulty are elevated beyond a typical school's, and they force you to collaborate with others. Everyone must collaborate. You're forced to learn time management skills. Senior: Boston University is one of the best universities in the nation! The students welcome you with open arms and are eager to meet new people from different year levels, so it is very easy for people to get involved in the BU community. As for the faculty, specifically the CS and Mathematics professors, they are the absolute best! They are so helpful inside and outside of the classroom, trying their best to make sure that their lectures are engaging, and putting aside a lot of time outside of their class for office hours. And if a student can't meet during office hours, they always try to find a way to help you out by setting up a different time to meet to thoroughly explain concepts discussed in class, answer questions that a student had, talk about possible research projects, or just have a good one-on-one conversation to talk about anything. Alum: I loved BC. It provided me with a top-notch education in the humanities, and I will continue to stay in touch with many of my professors even as a graduate. BC also provided me with the resources to grow spiritually, surrounded by (no joke) some of the most accomplished theologians in the world. The party scene was pretty great, and as long as you join a club or sport, you should have no problem finding an upperclassman to host you. Many students are, alas, quite “basic” and superficial, although perhaps I’m judging too hard. However, I was part of a group of people that was super smart, artistic, and down-to-earth, so don’t be too dismayed if you’re not a Vineyard Vines connoisseur! My biggest complaint is the administration. Other reviewers are unfortunately not being overdramatic by saying that the highest levels of administration don’t legitimately care about students’ concerns, and it seems that Jesuit values are just advertising for prospective students.... Junior: As someone who initially bypassed college to enter the workforce, I found it hard to really want to return back to school. Especially now that I have bills. Northeastern took my technology background and found a degree that works best with my career life while still making sure I’m engaged with other students on campus. It has been overall an incredible experience. I have met a ton of inspiring people and many people who have taken a detour from school like myself. This school is a hockey school! The men and women just recently won the Beanpot tournament and the crowd was electric for both. Supportive staff, innovative students and great alumni network. Alum: TL;DR: Williams is one of the best schools out there, especially for economically underprivileged and/or international students. Apply even if you think you won’t get in! Financials: I am a recent alumnus from a foreign country who had to pay less than 3K per year(!) towards my education at Williams; the rest was covered by non-repayable Williams grants. The College also pays for your medical insurance, ALL book expenditures, yearly round-trip to your home country (with all expenses). Other one-off expenses they covered: getting a visa, passport renewal, dental expenditures (over $10K). For someone who comes from a poor family whose total earnings are less than $30K/year, all this was an enormous benefit! Academics: Williams is very strong because its professors take time to teach you the material. 1-1 teaching sessions, research work with professors is easily attainable because professors care about their students. Senior: I transferred to UMASS Amherst last spring halfway through my junior year, and I’ll say that it was the best decision of my life. Sophomore: Tufts University is a great school and let me tell you why. The amount of financial resources and community resources available for low-income first-generation students is shocking. Although the school's diversity is not as great as it makes it seems on its website they do support the widespread minority racial groups. As a first-generation low-income student, there has not been a moment of experience where I felt unwelcomed or made less due to my ethnic and racial identity. Aside from the resources and the diverse community, the students at Tufts University surprisingly come to this college being who they want to be but as well in a collaborative mindset rather than a competitive one. What does it mean to be who you want to be? That's the best part. Anyone you want to be! If you want to have some strange outfit or follow a certain fashion trend you don't get hate for it (you will be acknowledged for it). Niche User: As a parent of a current Freshman student, we are happy with his choice. I cannot stress “right fit” enough for HS seniors and parents. My son knew he wanted a smaller school, but not too small. Near, but not to near, home. Not in a city but on the outskirts or easy access. Our other top choice in colleges was higher “ranked”, but WPI was a better fit, he just felt like he belonged on both campus visits before deciding. We knew he would have to dig in Term A and focus on getting used to the fast pace of the 7 week terms, and he did well his first term. He’s been able to relax a bit now and find a better balance B and C term. He’s in the oldest dorm and loves it, new housing purchases should ease dorm availability for upperclassmen. It’s a city! So be smart, but relatively safe. I don’t know why the Campus scores so low on Niche, I think it’s beautiful. The only downside is the campus FOOD D-F , it is well below par. Freshman: I have liked my experience so far at UMass Boston. I signed up to participate in the Freshmen Success Community (FSC) and it has opened so many doors for me. It has allowed for me to be able to be a part of a wonderful group of people who are on the same pre-medical track as I am. We have the same classes as well so we are able to help each other out with the understand of each subject. The campus is a bit small and quite windy, things I had not entirely expected at first, but I think it size works in its favor. It allows for only 10 minutes between classes which ends up being more than enough time to get there and you can finish your day in three hours! I am a bio major so my Tues/Thurs consist of labs but if I didn't have them I would only have one class on those days. Junior: UMass Dartmouth is a decent school. Everything about it is pretty good, if not better than than! The only things that could use any work would be the professors (seeing as some have thick accents, and others aren't the best at their jobs; but a majority are) and the dorms (seeing as there is no cooling in Sophomore dorms, which is a pain). The rest of the school and the experience there is, as said, good! While not a partier, there are a lot of parties that I've seen/heard about. The area around it is one that I've been in for most of my life. There are lots of stores, and a lot of food options if you don't like the food at the Grove (dining hall), Starbucks, Wendy's, the knock-off Subway, the ramen place, or the pizza place! There are many clubs and activities a few of which I've checked out an been part of. All of those experiences have been good. I have always felt safe on campus as well, as you should. Junior: I’ve been enjoying my time here! Academically: professors are awesome. The work can range in how challenging it is but its all manageable. Socially: it’s an awesome balance for me! I’ve found friends through living on campus, my classes, engaging in activities on campus, etc. The campus culture is polite. Campus can be quiet especially with COVID. However, I prefer a weekend to recharge or be with a few people anyways. Pre COVID, bigger parties happened but were done by 1 AM. There were also more in person events like BINGO. These still exist but distanced and outside if its nice. There are virtual events. Area: the surrounding area is suburban. There are some restaurants/businesses to explore but ultimately it’s quiet. I wish we were close to Boston sometimes, but I ultimately feel at home on my cozy campus! Alum: I am so glad I went to Wheaton, particularly for the academic experience. Sophomore: This college is perfect for me, personally. It is definitely a good choice if you're looking for a smaller school and a very tight-knit community. Everybody on campus is genuinely nice, the classes are perfect sizes, the teachers really care about your success, and they have great opportunities for everyone on campus - there truly is something for everybody. Specifically for my major, social work, the university offers so many unique opportunities, like 4 internships over my 4 years, to make my education the best it could be. The only downfall is as a commuter, I do find it kind of hard to participate in clubs and organizations because the times just don't fit my schedule, but there is always the commuter council to be a part of!
