My experience with Oglethorpe University has been an exceptional one because I feel like I matter, and not just as a student, but as a person, too. In class, I never feel like I'm just a number because my professors are great at making me feel like my opinions are valuable and are worth discussing. I also love the student atmosphere at Oglethorpe because everyone that I have met so far is warm and welcoming, and they genuinely want to get to know me as a person. The dorms are really cool because they have so many different options to choose from, which include an apartment style one, a suite style one, and a traditional style one, too. On top of that, I love how an all-access meal plan cost is included in the room and board cost for full-time students, so you can basically eat at the cafeteria for an unlimited amount of times everyday for the entire school year! Lastly, there are a lot of opportunities for student involvement, like working on campus or joining a club and Greek life.
I enjoy and appreciate the liberal arts education. I am a psychology student and this program is very good. The professors and staff are very helpful. However, even with scholarships this university is very expensive, especially for working class families. Some of the dorms are outdated with maintenance issues and the meal plans are expensive, with little choices for students with dietary restrictions. Without these current issues, I do enjoy being a student here. The campus is very diverse with a community aspect. There are also many activities and leadership opportunities for all students.
It would be nice to have more cafeteria options, but the education is good. The professors are fantastic for the most part and help students to succeed. With office hours, tutoring, and mostly required attendance, the school tries to aid students in completing their degrees. It is unfortunate that the graduation rate is so low, but it is mostly from transfer students, not students dropping out. Students generally transfer for more options and cheaper schooling, but Oglethorpe has many majors and minors and is cheaper than many other schools. Additionally, the university adds new programs and classes, so it is consistently expanding. The school's small size makes it a great place to learn, which should be the top priority at a college.
