As a first-generation student entering a college atmosphere, I knew absolutely nothing about how things ran. I was able to learn about registration, schedule classes, and understand my educational plan. I was exposed to career fairs, scholarships, and different types of internship opportunities. The institution's financial aid has immensely supported my education journey. For example, the Salinas Valley Promise Program (SVP) offered students two years with zero in-state tuition, regardless of household income. Other programs such as TRIO and MESA helped me become familiar with the campus, classes, and student life, apply for and join meetings held by STEM-related programs outside of Hartnell College.
My time at Hartnell College so far has been the best decision I have made. As a low-income minority student, Hartnell College was the best financial and travel-wise choice. Hartnell's community has been incredible, to say the least, students and staff are very kind and welcoming toward each other. Faculty and staff members I've met are willing to help and understand students' personal and academic struggles. Many professors are helpful to students and are willing to accommodate students' needs. Overall, it is a friendly learning environment at Hartnell, and I am glad I choose to attend here.
Honestly, as far as community colleges go, Hartnell's fine. I've had good experiences here but I've also had bad. Some of the counselors make it feel like they want you to not be able to transfer (suggesting classes that you don't even need...) While others are super helpful. But most of all, be careful if you drive to campus. Parking fills up fast!
