I attend GCU as a transfer student from Ocean County College. While I was nervous as it is a bigger campus and a 4-year university, I assimilated quickly as the student community was strong. There were many activities to be involved in, strong athletics teams, and students met for study groups often. I was an education and psychology major, and both programs were rigorous. Tutoring was available and professors were ready and willing to assist when needed. The library was equipped with resources and technology and the classroom technology was high-tech. I really enjoyed my years here and are sad they are behind me!
I’m going to be VERY blunt… This school is nothing special. I come from a large school up north (NJ), and I can’t help but feel like the odd one out here. The school is smacked right in the middle of a certain community which is not the issue. The issue is that since I am of a certain race, I tend to be the only one in all of my classes. Up north was a melting pot of cultures and people from all socioeconomic backgrounds and the environment reflected that. Here, the school is just a collection of old houses and some buildings don’t even have bathrooms. SMH. You have to walk out of your class and enter another building just to take a deuce! Lastly, there isn’t anything to do here. It’s like you have to go to PA, up north, and if the weather permits, the beach which is about a 30 minute drive. All I have to say is, I have contentions about becoming a student here. I wish I went somewhere else like SHU or RU.
The campus is really calm which is good for students that like a calm atmosphere. Commuting is okay, sometimes there is traffic but not severe. Professors, faculty and staff are very helpful to any question people may have. The food services at the university is good. There is a workout gym within campus which is useful for students that want to work out. The community here at the university is pretty diverse with many other students from different backgrounds to make friends with. Clubs are available on campus which is good for meeting new people who share the same interest as you.
