My first year as a freshman was okay. For the first time ever, I had to learn how to manage my time as a college student-athlete. I enjoy the environment at the college. Both the populace and the staff are warm and diverse. However, I would like to see more of an effort made by each department to support students in their efforts to raise and maintain their grades. To guarantee that students receive the resources they need to achieve academically, it would be advantageous to have clearer policies and support mechanisms in place. Additionally, utilizing various instructional strategies and teaching approaches would significantly improve the learning process. A combination of lectures, group discussions, interactive exercises, and multimedia resources would be more accommodating to a wider range of students because they come from different backgrounds and have varied learning preferences.
My first year at Delta State was the year the school changed from being a college to a full fledged university. My experience there was outstanding. The courses that were included in my degree program have served me well. I use lessons I learned from those classes everyday in my profession. I really appreciated the number of electives offered and the vast variety available. It gave me the opportunity to check out other departments and graduate with a couple of minor degrees as well as my major. The professors were great. They cared about their students. Not only did they care about us in the classroom - whether we grasped the materials, but also as a person. One of my professors changed a tire for me one day. I made a lot of lifelong friends at Delta State. While there were a few thousand students attending, that feeling of community was ever present. I will always have an appreciation for the education (academic and life) I received at Delta State University.
Delta State University is in a lovely city known as Cleveland, MS: every citizen you interact with is accommodating and kind to students. Each day I am proud to be fighting okra as I know I am supported by all the faculty, staff, and students. DSU is genuinely a place where you can join in and stand out!
