Overall, my experience at CSUMB has been just fine. My only complaint is the admissions and enrollment system when you are first starting at the university. It is a very confusing system and there are no immediately available instructions or guidance on how to navigate it. Getting into the courses you want is also difficult. There are many courses that aren't offered often, but are in high demand. Many students have to settle for courses that don't interest them. The lack of financial aid and assistance for certain students is also frustrating.
The campus is nice and housing is some of the best around. That being said, there is NO social aspect AT ALL. If you want to party, you need to go through an extensive "approval" process, and if ANYTHING is different or your advertise online, they'll 'revoke' your approval and run the risk of cancelling your housing license.
The parking situation is ridiculous. You'll pay hundreds of dollars for parking and then spend an hour driving around campus only to park 10 minutes or more walking away from where you need to be.
The classes are okay. Some professors love their work, and some make 0 effort. Don't take online courses, you'll never learn anything.

Decent classes, 29:1 ratio some courses need to be reconstructed. Some older faculty were teaching obsolete courses.
I love the wheat he there, I’m from a hot area so coming here and being near the ocean was amazing. The classrooms are smaller than larger colleges so you get more one on one time with the teachers and they are all super nice and supportive. At the beginning the of the year there are many events to get you involved in school. The dorms are amazing you don’t need to share with the whole floor only your tomatoes if your in a three bedroom or if your in a two bedroom you share with the room next door.
Amazing community! The staff and peers are super lovely! A great amount of services to help you and many clubs to choose from! The only thing I would like to see changed is some of the housing. Things need to be updated like the bathrooms and such but overall, great school.
My experience has been welcoming, especially since I’ve moved here to dorm. All the staff have been nothing but wonderful and understanding. I’m apart of a student service called TRIO and it has been a splendid journey to be able to have all this assistance so available to me. I understand all the services that can aid me to be successful.
I am writing this as a test to see what the rest of the survey is like. thank you for not submitting this.
I like that it’s a commuter friendly college but still growing as a university for other students. It is very nice and the weather is great. I love the science programs. A very great school overall.
I am so excited to be starting my higher education at Cal State Monterey Bay. I love the surrounding area, the diversity and the fact that I am far enough from home, but close enough at the same time. I have not been here long enough to share anything that I would like to see change.
Great professors. Laid back atmosphere. Great good. Great dorms. Great mascot. Great student services. Prompt admissions and financial aid staff.
My short experience at CSUMB has been great. I am a transfer student coming from Cabrillo College and everything has been wonderful! I will be starting next week but already seeing CSUMB through my orientation, I have felt very welcomed and helped.
My overall experience at CSUMB was a memorable one, there were many colleges to choose from but this one was my favorite. The dorm takes some getting use to but it’s an experience a college student will master. The spirit on campus is great and the resources like on-campus help, advisors, tutoring are for sure recommended. If you enjoy cold weather study days on the beach, this is the place for you to get your college education. I’m happy to say I went to Cal State, Monterey Bay and call it home.
At California State University - Monterey Bay, almost if not all of the students and staff are the most helpful beings I've ever come across! The energy feels immaculate and surreal. I feel at peace knowing that I am getting my education at California State University - Monterey Bay. I fully trust the knowledge of each and every staff to guide me on my educational journey. I have no doubt that I will graduate on time and with amazing grades and knowledge.
Csumb has been a very great experience for me. The environment has always been very welcoming , there are numerous resources offered and available on campus which make things so much easier. Csumb is a wonderful campus.
I think that the best part about transferring to CSUMB so far has been the staff. It has been very simple to get in contact with the people I need to answer any of the questions that I have. I also really like the opportunity I've been given by going there to get my teaching credentials in a shorter period of time.
The campus is very nice with lots of scenery and views. Living on campus was fine. And classes weren't too big that I felt like I wasn't getting attention from the professors.
CSUMB has a peaceful environment and is great for students who generally stick to themselves. One of the critics I have is that there isn’t a lot of campus life. I expected this when I visited my first couple of times but I realized that I wanted to become more of an extrovert person who participates in various activities. There are some activities in the beginning of the semester which they have to welcome incoming first years which provided a better opportunity to meet people. Overall, it’s a nice, small, and quiet school but I wouldn’t suggest it for people who like to go out all the time or go places in general cause there’s not much to do.
I picked this school over COVID when classes went online because of its pricing and the program I went into. Their humanities programs when it comes to writing, social services, history, and most classes of the sort are wonderful as an HCOM major myself. Professors can be a mixed bag, but the higher up into your major the better the professors are. There are also some amazing organizations on campus like Otter Media and The Performing Otters, which are entirely student run entertainment groups. Unfortunately the school doesn't have a lot of support for their arts programs, but I've seen some improvement in the last year or so. Associated Students, the student run government on campus, has also shown great improvement in taking student criticism in the past year or so. The biggest problem with CSUMB is a severe lacking in housing, which means both crowded spaces as well as high prices for minimal quality.
CSUMB is a newer and smaller university compared to others. This allowed more one on one time with students and teachers which i really appreciated. There were a lot of resources that were provided to us students. There was also a lot of events that took place for students which I really enjoyed. Overall the experience in class was also great. It was not always necessary to purchase expensive books because professors made sure to find affordable supplies for students. The classroom experience was fun & I learned alot throughout my time here.
What I enjoyed about the experience were some of the professor's teaching styles. One made the class think critically about the coursework and I thought that was unique because they didn't just agree with everything we said. They made us think, on the spot, about what we were studying.
I think with artificial intelligence what it is, the professor's might want to do their due diligence and discourage it. In class writing assignments would work to make sure the students are doing the work themselves and not typing the prompt into chatgpt. That devalues the degree in my opinion.
