Review California State University - Bakersfield
Freshman year was tough especially, for those first generation college students. I came from rough beginnings and had no idea what I was doing in college. I was grateful for the opportunity to attend school, but I felt pressured to be there. California State University of Bakersfield provided a first year college student 101 class. That was the best stress relief for me. The course provided me with support centers on campus for financial, mental, and physically assistants. Which I needed help with all 3. What I would change about Bakersfield education system is helping students more that are in financial troubles like myself. I never received FASFA and kept getting extension to pay my tuition til I ran out. For example: My EFC is too high however, I was not receiving financial support from home. I found myself in debt and homeless. If there was more of an outreach for students like myself it'd make it all the better.
This semester was a very confusing change for all of us. It is definitely going to take more than one semester to readjust. The staff and administration had a good plan going on but, the details were all a fuzzy to us students. You couldn't just ask one faculty member to see if certain information was correct, you had to ask at least three others to make sure what you're doing was correct. In our eyes the professors seemed either rushed or that they had "finished the material too early/ had too much time". There were also a lot of questions on which students would follow the semester catalog, the quarter catalog, or if they can follow quarter catalog for their major, and semester for the general education (and vice versa). With all of this confusion, however, I felt that the professors did a great job in remaining enthusiastic throughout the entire semester while most students were ready to "clock out" by week 10. We still have some adjusting to do but it's steadily going up hill.
The professors are very helpful and will go above and beyond to help you and make sure you learn the material. The Psyc department and advisors in particular are so genuine and really do want to help you succeed. Overall, great school!
