Overall I think my student child would have preferred to be in Tempe, although housing seems better. Access to classes in proximity to dorms is great. Parking is limited & pricyley. Cafeteria comfort level ok. The AC wasn't working the last few weeks and requesting carryout costs 6.00! Finally, talk of a plethora of scholarship money out there easily accessible to the ASU website is true. Yet, when applying not a single confirmed positive hit has been reveived. (Still applying and for my student as well. ) Seems that a lot scholarships have strict qualifications, and for Pell grant recipients. However, if Pell grant earners have free money, why would they be prioritized to receive even more free money for college. The system seems unfair. College costs and fafsa awards are not geared for hard working middle /working class families. Rather they're punished by having to take out large loans and not prioritized equally for scholarships.
The Downtown Phoenix campus of ASU is really great! Staff there are friendly, and the dining hall food is also good most of the time. Teachers are easy to reach, and communication is also very simple, you just have to do it first! They won't go to you! The people on campus are also really nice for the most part, it is really easy to socialize with the events that are always happening either on dorm floors, the patio floor, on Taylor Street, or in the Civics Space Park nearby. I have been able to meet lots of people on campus and even the TA's are super helpful. There are also many areas to study like the common areas on each floor, the many tables outside the dorm, library, or even Starbucks on the first floor of Taylor Place! Downtown Campus is also pretty clean for the most part, some trash here or there, but people there are very tidy and seem to be serious about their studies. Great experience overall so far.
Although I know many are hesitant to attend the Downtown campus at ASU, I had the most wonderful time my freshman year, and as I have progressed through the academic programs, I have found so many great opportunities here and I have gained so much knowledge.
The campus, though small, is so nice and there are so many hidden gems in the Downtown Phoenix area. I always find cool places to study, and there are so many resources there to help you exceed.
The professors are absolutely amazing. They have a lot of knowledge and expertise in their subjects, and are so willing to help you grow as well as help you find connections for your professional life.
You'll meet so many amazing people down here, and find friendships that will last for a lifetime. The community is small but strong, and it is so helpful to be surrounded by people that are motivated and dedicated to their academics and career.
Overall, I could not imagine a better campus to attend!
