I Found My Niche at Vassar College
Student Name: Cailan Baker
School: Vassar College
Major: Economics
My name is Cailan Baker and I am a freshman majoring in Economics at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. At Vassar I play on the NCAA men’s soccer team, am involved in multiple finance, consulting, investing, and cultural clubs. So far I have absolutely loved Vassar! Having gone through the recruiting process and having researched a plethora of schools all across the country, I can truly say that Vassar was the right fit for me.
Vassar is a small school with around 2500 students, so it is a given that you will know people, and surely find a group of friends. Additionally the relatively small student body enables students to have small class sizes, and allows for very personal relationships with world-class professors, something you couldn’t get at a larger school. There is a vast amount of both economic, racial, and cultural diversity which I think is extremely cool. There is no such thing as a “typical Vassar student.” In my experience, everyone has been warm and welcoming to the college. However, while everyone is friendly, I will admit that there is a slight divide between athletes and non athletes. This can be seen in small things such as in the dining hall (which I would classify as above average), where athletic teams typically sit with each other exclusively.
There is no animosity nor different treatment between the two groups of students, because in the end, everyone is extremely bright, and we all work towards the same goal of maximizing the college experience while simultaneously growing as people whether that be in the classroom or elsewhere.
In terms of environment and nightlife, Vassar is about an hour and a half train ride from downtown NYC, thus going to the city for a weekend or so is always an option. In Poughkeepsie, there aren’t a multitude of options of places to go, but there is always something to do if you look for it.
Academically, it’s rigorous; however, that’s what you sign up for by coming to Vassar. At times school can be very hard, but in the end it will all be worth it through your growth, learning, and marketability in the real world. If there are any questions about Vassar feel free to reach out!
