I Found My Niche at the University of Maryland
Student Name: Allison
School: University of Maryland
Major: Public Health Science
“Hi, my name is Allison, and I’m a rising junior at the University of Maryland, College Park. UMD was pretty much where I always wanted to go. It was where my mom went to college and I loved hearing all of her stories from her time there. After going to a small middle and high school, I was ready for a bigger campus and more opportunities, but I think it turned out to be bigger than I expected. I can still remember telling my mom that I felt like my lecture hall was the size of a small city, but I got used to it and now I love the bustling campus!
Even though I’ve adjusted to the size, it’s still nice to make campus feel a little smaller. Coming into UMD, I was invited to join the scholars program, which allowed me to live in the same residence hall as other students in my program and have a class with them. I also joined Greek life and became a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. I recently joined the UMD campus pantry team and have really enjoyed volunteering there during the week. I’m always looking for new ways to get involved on campus because there are so many opportunities – you just have to go for it!
I’ve always had an interest in healthcare, but I didn’t know what path I wanted to take. Helping people is my passion and I wanted as much patient interaction as I could get. Pre-med jumped out at me first and that’s what my original plan was, but then pre-PA found me and that’s where I’ve been ever since. I’m a public health science major and I’ve really enjoyed it because it has allowed me to have a diverse curriculum with different aspects of the health field, not just regular biology and chemistry. I would say my favorite classes that I’ve taken so far have been my sociology class and my epidemiology class.
The University of Maryland has helped me find my best friends and my calling. I’ve been able to meet so many people through all of my clubs and organizations, and the teachers make learning enjoyable. I couldn’t imagine going to college anywhere else, and I’m so glad I found my home at UMD.” – @allison.maria
