I Found My Niche at the University of California – San Diego
Student Name: Marysol Valdez
“Hello! My name is Marysol Valdez and I am a freshman at University of California San Diego! I am in Muir College and am an undeclared major. Our school takes many precautions to avoid spreading COVID-19 with social distancing guidelines as well as weekly COVID-19 testing. UCSD’s campus is absolutely stunning with many murals, statues and scenery; my favorite is the view of the ocean right outside my building. I have had very positive experiences when trying to receive help from my professors and TA’s; the staff works hard to make sure you succeed at UCSD. Even though the school is known for being ‘UC Socially Dead,’ I have made amazing friends here and have made such good memories so far.
Being a first-generation college student can be difficult, especially when a barrier such as COVID-19 restricts you from joining organizations or participating in events (in-person), but UCSD has given me many opportunities to become involved on campus. I am currently involved in the Triton Community Leadership Institute (TCLI), which is a mentorship program for first-generation students to learn and grow at UCSD. UC San Diego also holds many Zoom events featuring special guests, such as political activist Angela Davis, award-winning actress and producer America Ferrera, and many more.
Outside of the university, I intern at a non-profit law firm in San Diego to help grow my knowledge in the field of law as well as gain exposure for future career paths. I also devote time to community organizing and activism within San Diego county as well with national organizations (Women’s March, Brown Issues, Daughters of the American Revolution, etc.).
My experience at UCSD has been unforgettable and I can’t wait to continue learning and growing at this university that I am proud to call home.” – @maryvaldezzz
