I Found My Niche at Santa Clara University
Student Name: Kailyn
School: Santa Clara University
Major: Political Science & Philosophy
“I’m Kailyn (she/her), and I’m a rising junior at Santa Clara University! I’m double majoring in political science and philosophy. I’ve always been interested in politics, but the classes and professors at SCU have helped me to deepen my academic passions and continue to discern my career path. After completing a local internship in the Santa Clara District Attorney’s office, I decided to pursue law school.
At SCU, I’ve been working as a political science research assistant for my professor, and I’m involved in an acapella group and a social sorority! I attended high school in Minneapolis, Minnesota, so moving to northern California was a big change. However, the warm and welcoming atmosphere of Santa Clara made it easy to meet new people and find community.
My largest challenge was the isolation of being a POC at a university with a relatively low percentage of Black students. However, I’ve felt supported by the community that I do have, and many students are extremely focused on advocating for social justice in our local communities and school. Overall, I feel so lucky to attend SCU, and I couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else:)” – @kailynpedersen
