Student Name: Emmie McManus

School: Salem College

Major: Dance and Movement Science

“Hi! I’m Emmie and I’m a junior at Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. I’m majoring in Dance and Movement Science and minoring in Chemistry. This is my second year serving as President of the Salem College Dance Company; I’m also an admissions ambassador, orientation leader, and a member of Phi Epsilon Kappa honor society and the Association for Women in Mathematics.
I’m from Massachusetts, so it was a big adjustment my first year being so far away from home. Salem is such a small and tight-knit campus though, which really helped me adjust to college. Even when I first toured Salem during my senior year of high school, I could feel the sense of community and love on campus. I love that Salem is a small school because students are able to connect with professors. When I was applying to colleges, I knew I wouldn’t do well in a big lecture with 100+ students. My biggest class at Salem was around 25 people. Last year, I took a class with only four other people!
Even though we’ve been virtual all year, my professors have been checking up on students and trying to prioritize mental health. They’ve been really understanding about other priorities like familial obligations, jobs, and just general burnout from sitting in front of a computer all day.

I’m planning to graduate in May of 2022 and start graduate school for Nutrition that fall. Salem has incredible resources that connect students to alumni for networking and job/internship opportunities. Our career center is also super helpful with resumes, graduate school and job applications, interview prep, etc. Again, because we’re such a small school we are able to really connect with alumni and get 1-on-1 advice and mentoring!”—@emmiemcmanus
