I Found My Niche at Howard University
Student Name: Ilahi Creary
School: Howard University
“Hi! My name is Ilahi Creary, and I am a junior biology major and chemistry minor attending Howard University. During my college selection process, I never thought that I’d end up at an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) but I am so glad that I did. It has been a very pivotal experience in me finding myself as both a black woman and an adult. Between meeting people that will be my friends for life (shoutout to my @akpsi_psitau bros💙💛) and finding my true career path, I am so grateful to be able to contribute to the beautiful legacy of HBCUs and black education!
My ultimate career goal is to become a surgeon and eventually open my own research lab for minority STEM students. Having to continue my education and gain experience in my field during the pandemic has been difficult but not impossible. This summer I volunteered with a student led organization where I was able to tutor STEM students in India. I also participated as the social media marketing manager where I helped to raise $1,500 for school supplies to send to those students. Following that, I took a Covid-contact tracing course with Johns Hopkins University and was even selected to be a contact tracer for about a month. All of this has taught me so much about the importance of establishing relationships within your given field and has contributed to my passion of pursuing my MD. I can’t wait to become a doctor and inspire bright minds of new generations!”—@diosa.sol

Zoom hasn’t provided me the glimpse into life as a Bluejay that I wanted, but Hopkins feels like a dream already. Baltimore is full of charm, and the people—students, professors, and all—are unbelievably friendly and always willing to lend a hand.

The people here are amazing and the school is awesome. I’m so lucky that I get to cheer on the Tigers at every game and that I get to represent the school in some way.
I Found My Niche at Northwest Nazarene University
Sure enough, I found myself here my freshman year and it took all of one day to integrate myself into campus’ famous community. I say ‘famous’ because if you ask any student what their favorite part of NNU is, they’ll say our community! Fellowship comes naturally here, and I think we owe that to the Christian values our school was founded on.
