3 Simple Ways to See What a College Is Really Like Using Niche

At some point when you’re building your college list, you might feel like all the schools are starting to look the same. Sure, colleges tend to offer the same amenities and they all tout their school spirit — but they are far from the same.

At Niche, we know a college is more than its stats or buildings. We also know it can be hard to figure out a college’s vibe or how students feel about it from its website alone. Using our comprehensive college profiles and social media accounts, you can get a sense of what life at a college is really like. Here are three simple ways to do that.

1. Read reviews from actual students and alumni

Who can explain life at a college better than current and former students? Niche has a profile for every college and university in the U.S., and across those profiles there are millions of reviews from real students and alumni. Hear stories from students themselves by reading the reviews at the bottom of a school’s profile page, whether they’re glowing, critical or somewhere in between.

A four and a half star review that says "This school is renowned for its rigorous academic programs and world-class faculty. I would have the opportunity to explore a wide range of academic disciplines and majors. - Student, Class of 2026" And a two star review that says "It took me several frustrating attempts for a financial aid package, and even after all the effort, I still had to take out a huge loan that will take forever to pay off. - Student, Class of 2022"

2. Check out poll questions throughout the profile

In addition to student and alumni reviews, each profile also features poll questions asking students specific questions about their college. We ask about professors and classes, Greek life and sports culture — we even ask how students would describe other students on campus. Read through the questions to better understand what the college is really like. You’ll typically see poll responses in the Students, Academics, Campus Life and After College sections of a school’s Niche profile.

3. Head to our social media

Lastly, you should see it for yourself — and we can show you on our socials! Check out @NicheSocial on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube for campus tours plus content from current college students at schools across the country. You can even join our Discord to talk to current students or other prospective students about specific schools or college life in general.
